What is Mix Americano?

Mix Americano is a variant of the classic Americano, designed for mixed doubles. The pairing schedule guarantees that every team — wherever possible — consists of one man and one woman, and that during the night you partner with as many different people as possible, both as a teammate and as an opponent.

The format solves the 'stuck with the same partner all night' problem you sometimes get in a fixed mixed league. Everyone rotates, nobody is locked into one role.

Scoring

Identical to Americano: points per round, individual scores, total decides the standings.

  • Standard cap 24 points per round.
  • Rally scoring — every ball is one point.
  • Points are individual, not shared with your partner.
  • Men and women are shown in separate rankings as well as a combined ranking.

Rotation & pairings

The schedule is a variant of Americano in which every team in every round is one man and one woman (where the player count allows). You partner with multiple different women and men during the night.

Example 8 players (4M + 4F), 2 courts:

Round 1 Court 1: M1+F1 vs M2+F2 Court 2: M3+F3 vs M4+F4
Round 2 Court 1: M1+F2 vs M3+F4 Court 2: M2+F3 vs M4+F1
Round 3 Court 1: M1+F3 vs M4+F2 Court 2: M2+F4 vs M3+F1
Round 4 Court 1: M1+F4 vs M2+F3 Court 2: M3+F2 vs M4+F1

Tiebreaks & tied scores

  1. 1) Highest individual point total wins within the player's category (M or F) and in the combined ranking.
  2. 2) Tied: head-to-head in the rounds where the players were teammates or opponents.
  3. 3) Then: highest single round score.

Courts & players

Recommended group size: Optimal: 8 (4M+4F), 12 (6+6) or 16 (8+8) players. An equal split is essential for a clean schedule.

Odd numbers: No equal split? Two options: (1) play a normal Americano with random partners, or (2) have one gender rotate through more sit-outs so the pairings work.

Common mistakes

  • Not checking the M/F split in advance — the schedule will not line up.
  • Forgetting that points are individual, not per couple.
  • Rounds that are too long — keep them at 12 minutes so you fit 6+ rounds.
  • No separate M/F ranking — many clubs specifically want that distinction for the prize-giving.

Frequently asked questions about Mix Americano

What is the difference between Americano and Mix Americano?
In Mix Americano every team is one man and one woman, and you rotate so that you partner with multiple different women and men. In a regular Americano teams can be any combination.
Do you absolutely need an equal M/F split?
For a clean schedule, yes. With unequal numbers you can play a normal Americano or have one gender rotate through extra sit-outs.
How many rounds do you play in a Mix Americano?
Usually 5–7 rounds, depending on group size. 6 rounds with 12 players takes about 2 hours.
Are men and women ranked separately?
Most clubs keep both a separate M/F ranking and a combined ranking. Decide in advance which prize(s) you award.
Can I run this format in tennis as well?
Yes. Mix Americano works in any racket sport with doubles — padel, tennis and pickleball.
